9rules Round 7 is Open

Blogging Community — Posted: Aug. 6, 2008  ...   Last By: Kamigoroshi @ 3 months ago

For all you site owners out there who want to be part of something special Round 7 of 9rules is open for about 12.5 more hours so you still have time to submit your site. What I enjoy about these rounds is the diversity of content that we come across. It's amazing to me how information can spread across the web and simply one person telling their readers that 9rules has a round means that 10 more niches seem to open up for us.

With millions upon millions of blogs on the web it is good to see that there are still some people who simply write because they are passionate about a subject and aren't trying to chase the money (if you are good it somehow comes to you). I love money so don't get me confused, but I can't recall a blog that had it's #1 goal of chasing the money being a blog that I wanted to read.

Either way if you decide to submit I wish you the best of luck, it's never an easy task to open up your world to others.

» Google's Cutts: Good directions drive traffic to your website  ...  Last Reply: 4 months ago by Scrivs.

Well looking at what you have then the rich would just get richer while the poor stayed poor. You have to figure, the big sites get most of the links and therefore they get most of the traffic so the cycle of them staying on top would never stop.

Then you have artificial inbound links that people bring in. For I like the metric of the quality of links coming through. If you happen to get a link from the New York Times, that should definitely mean more than a link from blog #3234234234234.

» Google's Cutts: Good directions drive traffic to your website  ...  Last Reply: 4 months ago by Scrivs.

Haha it can be a bit depressing when you rely on Google for your traffic because so many factors come into play that you don't ever feel like you are really in control. They boost you up for no apparent reason and they have no problem penalizing you for those same reasons, but you will never know why.

All you can do is continue to produce good content and keep on getting inbound links and pray the search engine gods smile down upon thee.

I read this last week and I didnt' know how to respond. After the weekend has passed I still don't know how to respond. I would do very bad things to someone that bothered me like this. Or I would just ignore them, but it's hard to say to simply do that when they are interfering with your work.

Drudge Retort Was Posting Whole AP Articles

Blogging Community — Posted: Jun. 19, 2008

So, Drudge Retort got on AP's radar due to the posting of entire articles with exact headlines which all parties agreed constituted copyright violations two months BEFORE the most recent spate of DMCA Take Down Notices. Technically, Drudge Retort got onto AP's radar because those posts were flagged by software used by AP called Attributor. This is a data mining spider similar to the bots and web indexers used by search engines; content companies can use it to track the use of their content on the web. It is very important that people understand this because it makes clear that the AP is not on some wild rampage through the blogosphere, lawyering up to to go after every blogger who quotes an AP story in any way. Yet that is how this story has been portrayed including by a lot of people who should know better but are having too much fun bashing AP.

I like that type of motivation. We all get discouraged to the point of wanting to quit, but if we keep an eye on the people ahead of us and realize they probably went through the same things we did, the road doesn't seem as bumpy.

Technorati Launches Blog Ad Network, Technorati Media

Ads are sold on a CPM basis. They will not make revenue guarantees, says Jalichandra, but the split between parties is negotiable. He declined to state what rates have been negotiated with beta partners. This is similar to what Six Apart promises, which is also targeting the long tail of blogs.

» AP Goes After Bloggers For Posting Article Headlines And Snippets  ...  Last Reply: 5 months ago by Tyme.

To be fair the only way major sites get AP news is by licensing the content so I can see why the AP would be mad if a great deal of their content is being posted on a site. If we are talking small summaries as seen in Clips then I would think it would only help them.

Well WP has the unfortunate distinction of being the Windows of the blogging scene and by this I mean most widely used platform and therefore one that is going to be most susceptible to attacks. When the code is Open Source it makes it easier to find holes, but also makes it easier to patch them up.

Congrats on reaching your goal! You should definitely stick it out for the end of the month because I'm sure you know blog traffic can fluctuate so it's best to make sure you have it consistently over 50 pageviews a day for a while then move on to the next goal.

If you feel the stuff you write is Clips material don't hesitate to clip them and share it with the world.

How to Publish a Book in 2 Weeks for $200

Writing Community — Posted: Jun. 11, 2008

Am I the only one amazed that he can claim to write a whole book in a couple of days? Sure you can publish almost anything in 2 weeks if you finish it in a couple of days, but what kind of books get finished in that time period and at what length?

» Making Goals  ...  Last Reply: 5 months ago by Scrivs.

Goals are a great way to track your progress and actually give you something to aim for. If you start a blog and the only goal is to become popular then you have no roadmap of achieving that. If you say that you want to reach 50 daily visits to your blog it's easier to layout what needs to be done to achieve that goal.

The idea of course is to make sure you set realistic goals as you have done here. You can't set an end goal such as 100,00 pageviews daily without knowing that you need to each 100 pageviews first. If you can't reach the first goal then it gives you time to figure out what needs to be improved with the site so that you can achieve that goal. If you are stretching for 100k right off the bat you might waste the rest of your life trying to figure out why you haven't gotten there yet.

I'm just as susceptible to this as the next guy because sometimes we get caught up in what can be without remembering what needs to be done to get there.

» Titles are important  ...  Last Reply: 5 months ago by Cas.

I've never had a problem with titles, not sure if I just don't place importance on them so I breeze through them or if they just come to me naturally. Depending on the site you can see how my titles vary from "what the hell is this entry about" to "it's obvious what this will be about".

» Patience: Staying Cool as a Blogger  ...  Last Reply: 5 months ago by rileycentral.

There are indeed guaranteed ways to draw people to your site, but those ways do not guarantee them coming back or enjoying the content. You can be emotional and write all day, but if the equation still ends up being horrible content there is no point.

It's all the little pieces of the puzzle that need to be put together and having that emotion in your writing is just one of them.

» Questions and a Todo List  ...  Last Reply: 5 months ago by Scrivs.

Not a problem if you have any more questions you can shoot me a Private Message or just post here.

» Patience: Staying Cool as a Blogger  ...  Last Reply: 5 months ago by rileycentral.

I don't know if it is a bad thing, but when I read the title all I can think about was Tyme. She has no problem writing on emotion and I know a lot of the stuff she builds off of starts with emotion. When I have emotions take place behind a writing it depends on what type of reaction I'm aiming for whether or not I will be patient with it.

When you are talking about frustration though I can only imagine you are referring to the belief that since blogging is easy, success should come just as easily with it. The other side of the coin is that you can say you should be patient over and over again, but sometimes it just isn't working out no matter how patient you wish to be.

» Questions and a Todo List  ...  Last Reply: 5 months ago by Scrivs.

Well you might not be aware of this and this is definitely something we need to improve on across all the sites, but this site is part of a network so not only can you participate on Wriging with this account, but 9 other sites as well. However, if this is the only site that interests you feel free to stay over here.

Points:

  • 3 points for starting a Note.
  • 1 point for replying to a Note.
  • 10 points (I think I changed it to 10) for posting a Clip.
  • 10 points for having your Clip reach the frontpage.

As of right now you can give your points to others for any reason you feel, but most reward points for making great points in discussions. As you can see we've added buttons to allow you to quickly give 1,3 or 5 points to anyone. You can also spend the points in the store which of right now only currently holds headers, but we intend on expanding it in the future.

There is no set requirement for how many points you give to an individual and I don't think a policy has been set with regards to it, but I usually hand out 5-10 points for great content.

Blogging is Jogging with "B" and "L"

Blogging Community — Posted: Jun. 4, 2008

This is kinda like blogging. Blogging is 90% mental, you need to constantly be up on your game to present attractive and interesting information to your readers. You need to always think of what will bring the viewers in and what will keep them coming back. Sometimes this means you need to change the look of your blog, the type of entries or just getting out there and saying Hullo to fellow bloggers. Annnd, unless you get a response, a "Good job!", comments, views etc. you're going to get frustrated and it will be easy to give up.

» Blogging is Jogging with "B" and "L"  ...  Last Reply: 5 months ago by katelynjane.

The comparison I see between jogging and blogging is that in theory they are both easy. All you have to do is go out and run just like all you have to do is go out and write. You have to wake up and commit yourself to a specific amount of time per day just like you have to do for blogging. When you jog it's easy to slow down and quit early because you are tired. When blogging it's easy to think you have done enough for your entry and publish it too soon.

The best joggers are the ones who can get over the mental hurdle of giving up when they aren't into it.

» Hard work separates them from you  ...  Last Reply: 5 months ago by Scrivs.

Depends on what you consider consistently. If you think consistently is daily then most people can't, but consistently can just as easily be once a week for a person.

It's funny, but running sites like Facebook and Chawlk is way easier, if you consider the fact that your users produce your content for you, and you've just got to manage and market that content.

Yeah, only if you consider those facts and forget that you still need to get people to the site and once you do that convince them that they should write here instead of their own sites. All of this while making sure the community stays within the guidelines set and nobody goes outside the boundaries. Or keeping everyone happy by updating the site with features that users requests.

But after ALL of that then yeah, running a blog is harder.

Hard work separates them from you

Blogging Community — Posted: Jun. 3, 2008  ...   Last By: Scrivs @ 5 months ago

Blogging is the easiest way to make money...at least that is what many people would have you to believe. Setup a site, get a ton of ads in place and get to work on the SEO and in a couple of weeks you will be good to go. If you want money even quicker write a couple of top 10 lists and make sure to manipulate the social media sites in any way possible to make it on their frontpage. Yeah, making money through blogging is easy because I see others doing it. I can even count the examples on one hand.

And therein lies the problem. We see the ones that make their money doing nothing but writing words on a screen. It isn't hard to write a couple of paragraphs and press publish hoping that traffic will flow your way. It isn't hard to see someone else do it and think that you can do the exact same thing. It isn't hard to get caught up into not realizing that you probably aren't up for it.

Of the very small number of people that make a great living out of blogging (I'm not talking about the ones who make just enough here), you will find there is very little genius involved in what they do. What it comes down to is hard work and that is what really separates them from you.

The problem with saying this is that we all have our own definition of hard work. I know there are times when I am focused for three hours straight and after that I am exhausted. In that small timeframe I might have put my all into something and that is all I can do. Other people like to believe that if they were at the computer for 18 hours then they put in more hard work than you, even though 17 of those hours were nothing but idle time.

Because bloggins is so easy it only makes sense that the only ones that make the good money are the ones that work the hardest at it. The easiest part of blogging is the actual blogging and that is maybe 10% of the equation. It's the other 90% where we fail to make strides.

  • Can you publish consistently?
  • Can you take the time to research thoroughly so your entries are useful to others?
  • Can you take the time to promote your work across the web?
  • Can you take the time to build connections with other bloggers and your readers?
  • Can you take the time to make a publishing schedule for your entries?
  • Can you take the time to work on SEO and tweak ad placements for maximum revenue?
  • Can you publish consistently for years on end? Yeah I asked this question again because it is too easy to say yes to the first time.

Welcome aboard. This is a community in every sense of the word so the best way to get anything out of it is to participate on it. I know when it comes to blog marketing so often people like to resort to taking the easy way out by posting a link and leaving it at that, but that gets nobody anywhere. You need to make a name for yourself and you can't do that without giving back.

Make sure to get an avatar up so people can recognize you.
