I read tons and tons for my work and at night, certain magazines cover to cover. The magazines are weekly news-type magazines. About once a month, I get to my city's public library. I really don't read more because I figure it's very self-isolating. I have the time, as my described habits present. I don't have kids home.

I make time. It is a very rare day I don't read for 15 minutes as I drink my morning cuppa and I nearly always read for at least half an hour before I actually go to sleep. It helps me wake up/wind down. In between, I've pretty much always got my nose in a book if I'm not on the computer or watching one of the few shows I watch on TV.

It's a habit I picked up young. Everyone was always reading around me, so I read too. Even now, if all the family are together, it's not unusual for us all to be lazing round the living room reading. It's a remarkably companionable pastime!

The book-a-month goal is good to get started. Or the chapter-a-day. Small chunks you can digest in ten or fifteen minutes are good.

@cdevroe: "A short history of tractors in Ukrainian" - Marina Lewycka

I've included the Times review

Personally I was sceptical before reading it but I thought this was a very good read.

One of my goals for 2008 has been to read a book each month. So far I'm doing pretty well. I've read State of Fear, The Grapes of Wrath, and Everything is Miscellaneous.

As far as why I didn't used to read more. Because I read so much online. But now I'm starting to read a little less online and a little more offline.

Still haven't chosen my book for April yet. Suggestions?

Sorry, i don't believe you can ever read too much.

In fact, I wish people WOULD take the time to read more.

Unfortunately I read too many books, as opposed to too little. I need a break from my textbooks, I need to stop reading novels, and I have to stop rereading Lord Of The Flies.

Honestly... kids. :)

They're both under 8 years old and I'm so wiped by the end of the day that if I TRY to read something, it puts me to sleep.

Hopefully they can become a TINY bit more self reliant and give us time to read or do other stuff.

My response to the 'no time' issue was to get the audiobook version instead or in addition to. Then, when I hear something that catches my attention, I can go back to the book and reference it directly.

Because I've got a ton of journal articles to read. I miss losing myself in all the books I read.

Wait...do a ton journal articles count?

I can definitely see how a book club would motivate you to read because you are going to actually meet those people and it would suck to not know what is going on. The idea of carrying a book around is intriguing if I actually got out the house to go around somewhere. It seems just like working out, I would have to allot some time to reading at night.

Ah, it's that darn computer! I've got 5 books on my "currently reading" shelf. Most are bookmarked somewhere near the front of book awaiting my return. But alas, whenever there is a free moment I pull up the old trusty laptop and start clicking away. Maybe it's the glow of the screen that has me so hypnotized that all I can think about is the Internet...9rules is calling me...must read blogs...

Scrivs, I would say that I was similar to yourself. I wouldn't read for ages and then once I got stuck in a book you could write me off for a few days.

A few months back I got asked to join a book club, which has really helped change my focus. Not only do I have an incentive to read I also have a timescale. The other plus is that I end up reading material that ordinarily I wouldn't have looked at.

It's also an incentive that you get to discuss the book with like minded people - with a pint of beer! - and it takes me out of the routine for a few hours.

I read a suggestion somewhere to keep a book with you at all times, that way if you get time, or stuck with an unexpected delay, you're good to go.

Today's Quofda asks a question that I ask myself a ton and of course the quick answer is "not enough time", but that is a copout. There isn't a enough time for a reason and I have to think if that reason is more important than sitting down with a nice book.

I think my problem is when I read a book I usually do it in large chunks of time, but what is to stop me from enjoying a read for 30 minutes to an hour? I can definitely find time in my day to fit in those increments. So why don't I read more books? I don't make it a priority to do so.
