Silence

It's quiet here. Too quiet. And silence... well, silence is deadly. Don't believe me?

Corpus Cristy, Texas: A man came home to discover his dogs, cats and children have all been deafened. "Silence," they cried. "Silence was deafening!" Creepy thing to hear, especially from a cat. Their words scared the man, frightened him mute.

He was unable to talk, so he couldn't report it to police. Instead, he just went on with life, best he could, doing nothing but being silent, hearing nothing but his family's silence.

And it drove him mad.

Silence drove him mad.

There he was, in the passenger's seat, silence at the wheel, angering the man at each sharp turn.

By the time he returned home, silence had grown. It now filled his house. It was suffocating! And soon thereafter, the man died. He died of silence-related asphyxiation, as did his kids, his dogs, and cats. The only survivor was the lowly hamster, whose name police never learned.

But I did.

His name was silence.

(Alright, now its your turn. Explain why no one commenting on Chawlk for 4+ hours is a bad thing.)

Because people who don't talk to each other don't get to know each other. And people who don't know each other find it easier to hate each other.

I've noticed that too, Gnorb. Things have really slowed down around here. Sometimes I just want to get down and post an interesting topic, to spark off activity again (the topics here are really the things that keep Chawlk going - little good topics = little good discussion = less discussion = Chawlk losing importance) but I just don't have the time. I still check Chawlk every few minutes, though.

=(

Help?

I had a DSL outage when you posted this. My parents are visiting this week as well, so I'm having to entertain them.

I'll be back up to my obsessive reloading of pages by Wednesday, with the occasional post.

Yeah I'm not sure what's going on... Are all the old 9rules Notes commenters just AFK? Or have we lost some people in the move to Chawlk?

Oli I'd think it's the latter. It's probably going to take a little time to get people to mentally associated Chawlk with 9rules Notes/Clips. We planned on putting an internal ad up on 9rules saying, "if you're looking for Notes and Clips, go to Chawlk" but it hasn't been put together yet.

It's like any new venture Oli, it's going to take time for it to gain the momentum and recognition that 9rules has.

@Mike: You know, I've been using Chawlk for so long now that I forgot about 9Rules Notes. Didn't piece together that people may not be all that comfortable (for some reason) posting here instead of there. Odd, because going to 9rules.com/notes redirects to Chawlk.com/notes.

Hmm.

Yeah, it's quiet but it always quiets down this time of year, which is why this was a good time to do it (work on the site). Most people don't understand "what" happened (where the social part went) and since we're still developing the site it doesn't make sense to promote a site that is live but we really didn't launch Chawlk yet. It's still a work in process.

To answer the question, many of the "regulars" are up to the elbows in school work right now. I feel for them.

There aren't many topics I could respond to right now and the ones that I respond to doesn't have many responses that I can reply to. The result. Quiet time for me.

Which is sad cause I refresh Chawlk notes like every half an hour to see if anything is updated.

What I think we need are some community leaders to spur some topics of the day/week. Seems like a lot of us are consistently (read: obsessively,) checking Chawlk for threads.

I've checked this thread 634 times.

Today.

Does it count if you started the thread?

You need more help than I do. :)

Starting the thread doesn't count...who wouldn't want to see if anyone has replied to what we posted up?

Seeing what other people post up. That's a different story.

I wonder if we should form a Chawlk Addicts Anonymous?

I like the irony in that a topic about forum silence has gotten a lot of activity and attention.

I'm just busy with uni and life is all.

I'm busy with my Semester exams. Which reminds me I'm not supposed to be in Chawlk in the first place.

*scurries off to study*

Once we are done with the new stuff you guys will have a better picture of what is going on and then we can begin to get the momentum back. The thing about silence is you want there to be activity, but do you want it enough to start something off yourself or do you just wait knowing that waiting might cause even more silence?

I forgot to mention how great the short story was Gnorb, you have some skills.
