I have no idea what that title means.

My question is this: Who out there writes their blog based around a strict topic structure (meaning my blog is about Web Design and almost nothing else); and who out there writes in a more free form method (I jot down whatever random bit of information comes into my head, big or small)?

Personally, I just write whatever comes to me. I comment sometimes on the news I read in the paper, on Digg or wherever. And I certainly try to link to other blogs and their news. But, for the most part I write about whatever is interesting to me that day, even if it's just a snippet about what I'm having for lunch.

What side are you on, and more importantly why? Which type of blog is "better" in your opinion?

I stick to tech in my articles section... But that's quite broad... Webdev, programming in general and security (mainly).

In my blog posts, I rant about games, webdev news, programming news, politics if it's particularly interesting to me and even plain funny things (like being able to see a massive penis from space).

I think it's harder to keep visitors when you're running a multi-niche site because you need to keep them all entertained all the time. This means churning out content that would satisfy one niche multiplied by how many niche's you're trying to go with at any one time.

But I'm just happy to be writing about what I love. I'm not too bothered if other people don't like it -- they do have many options to drill down on the different topics they want to see.

I have one site for all my nonsense and a bunch of other sites that are strictly for one topic (my girlfriend, food, quotes, etc.)

Neither type is better. They're just different.

I adhere to one topic (convenience foods), though I've considered branching out into other areas. I'm not sure I have the time or energy to make another blog quite as extensive as HeatEatReview.

Oli hit the nail on the head in terms of non-niche blogs. You've got to be on a constant lookout for good content. I just have to find disgusting things in the frozen food aisle.

Right now mine is just whatever, though it is divided in to three sections. I'm working on a couple of topic-specific ones, though.

I try to stick to politics but sometimes there is just something I have to get off my chest. That's why I have a "personal" category.

Since I recently left my job reviewing software and graphics gadgets for a Mac web-magazine I kinda miss getting free "toys" in the mail to play with so I MAY decide to pull a second blog and see if I can get going on my own with product reviews... but who knows.

I agree with Abi that no one type is better, although I find keeping everything focused on one topic easier to write and also easier to read - that's just a personal choice though.

I have my Formula One blog, which is solely about Formula One. I don't even include other motorsports unless it is highly relevant.

But to help me vent on occasion, I have a personal site that is full of rants, raves, thoughts and feelings. No structure, no aim and no goal - just pure me.

I much prefer to write on my F1 site than my personal site though as I feel I have accomplished more when I do.
