Seeing as how the Triad is in 3 different states most of our communication is done via IM. Because of this we use the same cool terms that all the kiddies do, one of them being "brb". However, when I told Tyme today I would brb, I wasn't sure if it would be less than 20 minutes so then is it still okay for me to say brb? Is there a time range for brb that if you go over you can no longer say brb, because well...you won't be brb. You will be bbl.
What is the timeframe for brb?

Now that you say that I went away and said I would brb and I was gone what 15 minutes?
Oops.
bbl to me means later - like hours later. brb is cool to me for most people going away and coming back. What sucks is when someone says brb, you're waiting to say something and they don't come back lol.

I have a friend that says "brb", then signs out. It annoys the fuck out of me. The world would be much better if we all said "back in x minutes."

My instinct tells me that brb is no more than 5 minutes, the time it takes to answer the phone, take a pee, save the pasta, pay the pizza guy or chat with the other person IMing you.

I will agree totally with what Andrew is saying - brb to me implies it's just going to be a short break in the conversation to deal with something that's come up. If it's going to be longer than 5 minutes, then I'll use X minutes or "later".

I'm with the Statute of Limitations on BRB being 20 minutes. Commonly it's 5 minutes but then I'd give 'em a 15 minute grace period before enlisting them on my BRB Black List. ;) I'm likely doing something while I'm online, anyway, that doesn't center around the convo.
Like Tyme said, BBL would suit anything longer.

hmm for me its
BRB : < 5min
BBS : > 5min < 30min (Be Back Soon)
BBL : > 30min < 60min
AFK : anything till you get back.

Glad I'm not the only that share this opinion, I don't know how long this bothered me. Mike is the worst at this.

Ok, let's say I say brb and I'm going to do laundry I'm on the 2nd floor, I have to go to the basement, put the clothes in, then come back. That's not "that" big of a deal but I can't think of a time I come downstairs and someone doesn't say something to me. I could see myself telling my kids: wait one sec, gotta get back to this IM...
I will rush back if I'm in the middle of a convo or not leave. I know things come up but it's rude to me to leave in the middle of something if avoidable.
I'm online all day talking to people. I think part of it comes down to knowing the person's habits. For example around 11 the guys know exactly what I'm doing and approximately how long I'll be no matter what I say.
Or perhaps because the person is online I can say whatever I want to say and it will be there when they get back prompts me not to focus on time much?
@Scrivs - LMAO things you learn...

This has to be the most pointless discussion ever on 9rules.

No Rich, I assure you, this is the most pointless discussion ever. Not even a discussion actually.

Yet Rich has contributed twice only to amplify how pointless it is. The greatness of Notes can not and will not be denied.

I are discussing, now.
Sebastiano brings up the oft-forgot BBS. True, Sebastiano, true.

BRB is a trip to the bathroom or to grab a drink. 5-15 minutes.
BBL is a trip to the store for steak, or a 20+ minute trip.
Later is just that, I'll talk to you sometime in the nebulous "later"
Basically, BRB is a wait for me. BBL is you can wait, but don't hold your breath. Later is don't wait up!

I usually give times (a rough estimate, at least) when I brb. I bbiab when I don't know how long it will be (but I know it will be within a few hours). And I usually verbalise afk to describe what I'm up to. Examples include:

I'm such a brb abuser. I'll tell someone that I'll "brb" with the intention of just heading into the kitchen and brewing up a mug of tea, but then I'll get caught up in doing something else like talking with someone, watching TV, etc. and I completely forget that I've left someone hanging, wondering why I've completely disappeared. Oops.

Yeah I am bad at this and I do abuse the "brb" notation. BRB for me usually means between 10 minutes and an hour, if I'll be longer I normally try to say "be back later on" since I hate the BBL abbreviation :)

I don't know the rules, I rarely use IM but think I've been on a brb for 24 hours before.

i usually use brb. and when i use it, i mean it.
Then i'll probably be back around, say, 15 min? or 20 min.
Well, there is another possibility. Say, you're my friend but you're annoying me and dampening my good mood. Then i'll probably say brb, then do whatever i want and take my own sweet time. But i'll feel guilty after 25 min? or even 35 min, then i'll apologise furiously. LoL. But that rarely happens cause i'm good. =)

My timeframe for brb would be somewhere between 5 to 15 minutes. You never know if that phonecall is going to take 5 or 15 minutes.
And as we all know "away is the new online"
